Cold Weather Travel Advice

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

No one likes the idea of driving in dangerous road conditions.  And snow driving is not fun driving.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City would like to offer you some stormy weather tips:

  • Stay off the roads if at all possible
  • If you have to drive make sure you have an emergency road kit for your car
  • Pay attention to the latest weather reports and road closures
  • Before you travel, notify friends or relatives of your route, destination and estimated time arrival

Freezing rain is even more dangerous than snowy conditions as ice can freeze on pavement and cannot usually be plowed:

  • Freezing rain coats everything and leads to falling tree branches and power outages
  • Don't drive if there is, or recently was freezing rain

We hope these tips can help you out when you think about hitting the road on cold weather days.  Be Safe!

Space Heater Safety

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

Who doesn't like a space heater to keep their feet warm at your desk on a chilly day.  Or to plug one in to warm up a room.  A supplemental heat source should be operated with a measure of caution. According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters, whether portable or stationary, account for two of every five (40%) of home heating fires and four out of five (84%) of home heating fire deaths. If you're using a space heater, help reduce the risk of fire with these tips:

Radiant space heaters warm whatever is directly in front of them, while convection heaters can help make an entire room feel more comfortable. To use them safely, consider the following tips:

  • Purchase units with an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label.
  • Keep heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn, such as upholstery, curtains, pets or people. Approximately half of fires in residential buildings involving a portable heater occur because the unit is too close to a combustible material.
  • Keep the unit on a level surface and plug it directly into a wall outlet.
  • Never use a space heater to dry clothing.
  • Select a unit that automatically switches off if the unit tips over.
  • Do not leave a space heater unattended, especially when children or pets are in the room. Do not leave an electric heater on overnight or when you're sleeping.

Your friends at SERVPRO of Jefferson City hope these winter weather safety tips are useful to you.  Safety first.

Stop, Drop and Roll - Fire Drills at Home

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson City will be faster to any size disaster in the event you have a home fire.  But to be completely honest with you, we'd much rather teach you some home safety tips to prevent us from having to clean up what remains of your fire ravaged home. Now is as good as time as any to begin fire drills with your family.  It will get your children interested in the change of routine and keep adults in practice as well. Practice exactly as you'd do it in real time. Define, step-by-step, what you expect your children to do.

  • Start the fire safety training drill by sounding a smoke alarm, so children can recognize the beep as an early warning to fire.
  • Leave everything behind and follow the escape route. They should never attempt to pick up toys and personal possessions, or look for their parents, siblings or pets. Sticking to the evacuation plan to get out safely is most important.
  • Teach them to stay low to the floor, moving on their hands and knees, if there is smoke in their room. To avoid inhalation, instruct them to cover their face with a pillowcase or shirt.
  • Show them how to crawl over to their bedroom door and touch the doorknob first. If it's not hot, they should proceed out the door and exit the house to the safe meeting place outside. If it's hot, they should go to their window and wave a shirt.
  • Stop, drop and roll. Practice this important safety move so you can help prevent serious burns if your clothes are on fire.
  • Repeat the plan until they have mastered it. With enough drills, you can avoid panic and confusion if a real fire strikes the home.

Talk about next steps, like calling 911. After you have gotten to your meeting space, talk to your children about calling 911. Children old enough to understand the phone should know how to call at the first sign of an emergency. But remember, kids can sometimes think it's funny to prank call 911, so stress to them that it is against the law and carries consequences.

Tips for Making a Storm Damage Claim

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

Nature sometimes shakes things up a little. If your home didn’t weather a storm as well as you hoped it would, we're sharing some tips to help you file an insurance claim for storm damage and get back on track quickly. Here’s where you should start.

File a Storm Damage ClaimNeed to report storm damage for a claim?  Call your homeowner's agent or contact the claims center.

Act quickly. Filing a claim with your insurance company for storm damage in a timely matter is important for a couple reasons. Most insurance policies limit your time to file a claim, which makes being quick to connect essential. You’ll also want to repair the damage to your home or property before it has a chance to get worse, so reporting your claim early is the best approach.

Review your policy. If you know what your homeowners policy and optional insurance covers, how to proceed and what you can expect from the process, you’ll be better prepared to plead your case. Every insurance policy and claim is different. Reviewing your policy gives you information that specifically applies to you.

Document everything. It’s smart to keep a log of the storm and the damage. Save news reports and take pictures immediately after to document any damage. Don’t start cleaning up until you’ve documented as much of the damage as is safe and wait to handle the big messes until after a claims adjuster has assessed the situation.

Get quotes from the professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City.  While your personal walk around and assessment is important, a professional opinion will be thorough and may mean more to your insurance provider.  They specialize in finding, assessing and repairing damage from storms and will check your home from roof to basement.

Be wary of scammers. Unfortunately, storm damage can bring scammers to your area with promises of quick and cheap repairs. Whether you’re filing an insurance claim or not, research anyone who offers to repair your home.

Mitigate your damages. If the storm affected a large area, you may have to wait awhile before a storm assessor can review your damage and maybe even longer before you can get it fixed. In the meantime, you’ll want to take steps to prevent further home or property damage. This could include tarping your roof, cleaning a wet basement, boarding up holes and more. Document the damage, then document how you’re taking steps to protect your property.

Types of Winter Weather in our Area

12/29/2020 (Permalink)

Do you have any questions on how to distinguish the types of winter weather in our area?  Let's start with the basic winter storm.

A winter storm is a combination of heavy snow, blowing snow and/or dangerous wind chills.  They can be life-threatening.

Blizzards are dangerous 'winter storms' that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibility.  While heavy snowfalls and sever cold often accompany blizzards, they are not required.  Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has already fallen, creating a ground blizzard.

Ice storms are are a storm which results in the accumulation of at least .25" of ice on exposed surfaces.  They create hazardous driving and walking conditions.  Tree branches and powerlines can easily snap under the weight of the ice.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City hope you are prepared for the upcoming cold weather. And if you're not, we hope after reading this it will serve as a reminder that it's time to prepare your home or commercial business for the damage winter weather can provide.

When winter weather strikes, call SERVPRO of Jefferson City to strike back and help make it "Like it never even happened."  573-635-5883

Severe Winter Weather and Your Home

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

If your home winter weather ready?  Here it is the end of December in Central Missouri; we've had the cold temps but only a few flurries.  But don't give up on the big snow just yet, as we have a good three months left of cold weather.  If we are fortunate enough to have a warm weather day pop up, this will be a good time to clear your rain gutters, and clear away tree branches that could fall on your house or other buildings during a storm. Roofing companies still work during cold winter days; hire a contractor to check the structural integrity of your roof.  Heavy snow accumulation on your roof can lead to sever water damage and flat roofs are particularly vulnerable because the snow is not able to slide off, causing the pile to grow and increase in weight.

We hope you don't need our services, but do know that the professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City are always here to help you with any water damage you experience from cold winter days.  573-635-5883.

Temperatures are dropping and as always, we're bound to have some frigid Central Missouri weather days ahead of us.   It's unfortunate that home fires occur at all, let alone that they occur more in the winter months than in any other season. SERVPRO of Jefferson City has some information to provide for your winter weather safety:

  • Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far away from your home as possible.
  • Install and test carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month.
  • Plug only one heat-producing appliance (like a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time.
  • Hire a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every year.

Be Ready BEFORE the Storm

12/26/2020 (Permalink)

It’s just a given that storms are inevitable.  Your friends at SERVPRO of Jefferson City would like to provide you some tips for safety before the storm even starts.

  • Build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Remember the 30/3 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder.  Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades, or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

These are tips provided by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).  SERVPRO of Jefferson City is just a phone call away if you encounter a disaster after a storm.  573-635-5883.

Why Fires Start in Commercial Buildings

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

According to the USFA, even though every business is different, commercial fires tend to start for the same reasons. As a business owner, it's important to be aware of these causes, so you can do your best to prevent them.

  • Cooking- Kitchen fires in restaurants are the most common source of fire in non-residential buildings, often because the grease traps, hood suppression system, and exhaust vents for commercial stoves, broilers, and deep fat fryers are not properly cleaned and maintained.
  • Electrical and Heating Malfunctions– Worn electrical cords and faulty wiring are also a major cause of commercial fires.
  • Arson- Intentional fire-setting in abandoned buildings, especially in the current economic climate, provide an easy target for fire setters. Don't let these hazards kill or injure firefighters.
  • Smoking- Even in a smoke-free building, you can't watch what your employees do all the time. It only takes one cigarette to start a fire. Many historic hotel fires, and the Sofa Super Store fire, were started by someone smoking cigarettes.
  • Improper Storage- Most fires in storage properties are not in warehouses but are in garages, barns, silos, and small outbuildings. Many fires are started when flammable materials are stored too close to a heat source.

Additional Risks

Your business may have fire risks that aren't covered here. Commercial fire sprinklers can protect all types of businesses from fire, making them a worthwhile investment in your building and employees' safety.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City wants to help protect your investment.  Give us a call at 573-635-5883.  We'll make it "Like it never even happened."

She gives her best.  Give us a call and find out for yourself.  You can even talk to Lisa with SERVPRO of Jefferson City at 573-635-5883.

Water Damage To Your Ceiling

9/16/2020 (Permalink)

The professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City know a water spot when they see one.  And if you happen to see one don’t be immediately alarmed that your roof is leaking.  Oftentimes a stain can be the result of drips in the attic from condensation on pipes.  There are many water lines that converge in the attic space: upstairs hot water heaters, plumbing, A/C lines.  Be aware that cracks can allow slow leaks in the attic crawl space which then could lead to stains on the ceiling.

Other signs to be on the lookout for are:

  • Musty odors
  • Discolored growths
  • Stains, streaks, shadows
  • Peeling ceiling or wall surfaces

Even if your ceiling doesn’t look bad now, be aware it doesn’t take much water to create a disaster. A red flag that your ceiling is at risk of failure are depressions around the fasteners; you will see tiny dimples forming on the ceiling because the drywall encompassing the nails or screws droops, leaving an inverted crater.  So, if you feel you might have water or mold damage to your ceilings, give the professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City a call at 573-635-5883.

sludge left in a garage from a flash flood This flooded garage was created by flash floods.

On July 19, 2020, Jefferson City was hit with approximately five inches of severe flash flood waters, maybe better described as sludge, that produced as much as 24 inches in main level garages to just within inches of one homeowner's basement rafters.  Many of these home owners lived in areas that were not declared as flood plains, so needless to say, they were caught off guard by the sudden rush of waters into their homes.  As the phones of Jefferson City's SERVPRO were staying busy with customers, so too was our production team, as they next flew into action inspecting affected areas, extracting excess water and prepping the area for drying.  The monitoring process begins after this and all updates are communicated to the homeowner.

Our team’s jobs range anywhere from water extraction from a busted water pipe, smoke and soot removal from a kitchen fire, mold from a water intrusion or biohazard cleanup from a suicide.

Our SERVPRO of Jefferson City team is prepared to handle any size job.  We’ll make your disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Water-Saving Tips

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that as much as 20% of a household's water usage is in the kitchen?  We have some quick and easy tips for saving water in the kitchen.

  • Purchase a low flow kitchen faucet.  Today's faucets have a flow rate of 1.5 GPM.  Older faucets, 5 GPM.
  • Use your dishwasher instead of hand washing dishes.  Make certain you have your dishwasher full.
  • Soak pot and pans. You'll use more water scrubbing under running water.
  • Steam or roast your vegetables rather than boiling.
  • Use washable spray mops and spot clean floors rather than mopping the entire floor.
  • Save your running water.  How many of us run tap water while waiting for our water to get hot or cold.  Instead, fill a pitcher of drinking water for the fridge or keep a bucket for watering your plants.
  • Fix leaks.  Fifteen thousand drops of water can make a gallon.  A leaky faucet can waste over 3000 gallons of water a year.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City wants to be the professional you can call at any time for water disasters.  We are available 24/7/365 - 573-635-5883.

Tips for Keeping your Bathroom Plumbing in Good Shape

7/15/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that no other room in a house contains as many pipes and plumbing fixtures as the bathroom?  The toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, hot and cold water lines, and drainpipes in any household bathroom handle an immense amount of work.

Never flush trash into the toilet

It's not a trash can.  Toilet paper should be the only paper being flushed.  Facial tissues are highly absorbent and can easily swell to block the pipes.  And wet-wipes can clump together and turn into a huge and difficult to remove clog - not only for the bathroom plumbing, but in the sewer line and municipal sewer system.

Protect the drains with drain covers

Basic mesh drain covers in the sink and shower protect the drainpipes from most of the problems leading to clogs.  Clean the covers periodically so they won't cause slow drainage.

Never use chemical drain cleaners on the drains

Store-bought drain cleaners are acidic chemicals and are only temporarily effective.  They can create severe damage to drainpipes, leading to corrosion.  If you can't eliminate a drain clog with a plunger or a hand-cranked drain snake, call for a professional plumber.

Replace Outdated pipes

Do you live in a home built before 1970?  There's a good chance you have outdated piping material in your bathroom.  It is recommended you replace lead, steel, iron and polybutylene pipes pipes, all of which are susceptible to corrosion and/or breakage.  Lead pipes are potentially hazardous for drinking water lines.

Schedule Routine Maintenance and Drain Cleaning

This is a great preventive and maintenance service to help your bathroom plumbing stay in top shape.    Regular cleaning using professional tools removes build-up in the drains, and this not only prevents clogs, it helps to stop pipe decay.  During drain cleaning, plumbers can also find out if there are hidden leaks or components that may need repairs or replacements.

Does Your Business Have Plan for a Fire Emergency

7/4/2020 (Permalink)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends all businesses have an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees, and your business during an emergency.  They also suggest the following steps when developing such a plan.

Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with your company's emergency plans. Select an individual or team of individuals to lead and coordinate your emergency plan.

Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits, where they are easily accessible to all empoyees.  Ensure all exits and routes are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough tot accommodate the number of evacuating personnel, and unobstructed and clear of debris at all times.

Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills.  Designate a safe spot outside the facility where employees regroup, recover, and conduct a head count.  Once completed, evaluate how well the plan worked and if additional training or exercises are needed.

Work Place Water Damage

6/3/2020 (Permalink)

It’s not always storms wiping out power lines, or flooding in offices that can close down your business for days at a time. While it is true that commercial water damage is often the result of floods and water that stems from weather events and storms, there are other causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Malfunctioning sprinkler systems
Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While such sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement. This could easily damage inventory and business assets.

2. Damaged appliances and equipment
This cause of commercial flood damage is more common in restaurants and catering facilities, as well as any business that has appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance fails and sends water across your building, especially during late hours when no one is around, you may come back to work and face a water emergency.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing
Just like in a residence, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails water damage could be the result.

4. Backed up sewer lines
This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated Black Water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of Jefferson City will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at 573-635-5883.

There's nothing more pleasing to a business owner than receiving a review from a customer who gives your production crew wonderful accolades such as the ones that follow:

Thankfully we had never had to experience any kind of damage in our home. We had left for the weekend and came home to a valve in our vanity was heavily spraying water all over. We fixed that immediately, but was left with a mess. Our insurance gave us names to call and hearing how SERVPRO came highly rated from my brother, we called them. They got things started drying out immediately and I stressed how important it was to do it fast and furious as we were having company coming from Seattle on Friday.....3 days away. DJ and Jeanne did an amazing job! Jeanne even made a special trip herself in the dark and cold to bring a new dehumidifier. I felt bad, but she was very professional about it. DJ was also very nice. Levels of Commercial Damage

3/20/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson City handles not only residential damage and restoration, but commercial as well.

There are three levels of commercial damage that are considered:

Level 1

Level 1 is a small commercial loss typically involving 15,000 square feet or less of affected floor space. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a small commercial loss may include, but are not limited to, a stand-alone retail establishment, a small church, a daycare facility, a small shopping center, a small warehouse or manufacturing facility, or a stand-alone administrative building. A Level 1 loss can also be a small portion of a much larger structure.

Level 2

Level 2 is a midsize commercial loss typically involving 15,000 to 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved are usually multi-level or greatly divided spaces. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 2 loss may include, but are not limited to, a small multi-family property, a midsize church or school, a small shopping center, a multi-tenant administration facility, or a midsize warehouse or manufacturing facility. A Level 2 loss can also be just a portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3

Level 3 is a large commercial loss typically involving more than 60,000 square feet of affected floor space. The building or buildings involved will likely be large multi-level structures. If the facility was entirely affected, examples of a Level 3 loss can include, but are not limited to, a large church, hospital, school, or university; a large multi-family property; a mid- to high-rise retail or administration facility; a large industrial, manufacturing, or warehouse facility; or a large strip-style shopping center or shopping mall. This is the level at which it would be appropriate to refer to the project as a “large loss.”

Once SERVPRO of Jefferson City determines the level of loss, the property is further assessed, and a team of appropriate size is dispatched to get the job done quickly and efficiently, and return your business to operation “Like it never even happened.”®

Keeping your Pets Safe During a Storm

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

We love our pets.  They are a huge part of our family.  When you prepare safety tips for your family be sure to keep your furry friends in mind, as well.  ASPCA, the Animal Poison Control Center offers five tips to make storms safer and less stressful for your extended family member.

  1. Shelter - Make sure your pet is acquainted with the room or area you will go to in the event of a storm.  It may be a small interior room or possibly your basement.
  2. Poisons - You may be keeping poison substances in some of your shelter rooms. Eliminate any toxins from those areas.
  3. Anxiety - If your pet is prescribed anxiety medications and you know a storm is headed your way, give them a dose of their medication prior to the storm hitting your area.
  4. Evacuation - Know where your pet's leashes, carriers, food and medication are.  Keep a bottle of water handy for them.  Also, know where your pets' favorite hiding places are in case they decide to sneak off as the storm approaches.
  5. Prepare a pet first-aid kit.

The safety of your pet is as important to us as you.  We at SERVPRO of Jefferson City hope you will take the time to help make your furry friends' time during a storm less stressful.

The Special Olympics Training for Life Campus - SERVPRO's Part in the Cleanup

special olympics training facilityi The Special Olympics Training Facility before it was hit by a tornado on May 22, 2019

On May 22, 2019, a tornado ripped through Jefferson City causing major damage to both residential and commercial businesses.  One of the business that was hit was the Special Olympics Missouri Training for Life Campus.

The Special Olympics Training for Life Campus is the worlds largest sports organization with nearly 5 million athletes in more than 10 countries - 16,000 of them here in Missouri.  They are also a global social movement.  Their initiatives are to activate youth, engage kids with intellectual disabilities, build communities, and improve the health of their athletes.

The Training for Life Campus is a state of the art facility for people with intellectual disabilities to discover their strengths and abilities, skills and success.  These athletes inspire our community.

It was a devastating hit for the Special Olympics and SERVPRO of Jefferson City was proud to be a part of the cleanup process of packing out furniture and storing it until the center is rebuilt.  While being housed at our SERVPRO warehouse our crew takes pride in cleaning the furniture and restoring it to it's original state.

Save Lives- Invest in a Smoke Detector

1/29/2020 (Permalink)

Thousand of people lose their lives every year in residential fires. In a fire, smoke and deadly gases tend to spread farther and faster than heat.  That's one reason why most five victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxic gases, not from burns.  A  majority of fatal fires happen when families are asleep because occupants are unaware of the fire until there is not adequate time to escape.  A smoke alarm stands guard around the clock and when it first senses smoke, it sounds a shrill alarm.  This often allows a family the precious, but limited time needed to escape.

About two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.  Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are considered to be one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire and could reduce by almost half the risk of dying from a fie in your home.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City wants our customers to keep safe.  If we can be of help at any time give us a call at 573-65-5883.

Smoke Alarm Guidelines

1/29/2020 (Permalink)

If you don't have a smoke alarm installed in your home, purchase one and install it.

It is very important to install smoke alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions.

It is recommended a smoke alarm be installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms.

The USFA recommends that every home where people sleep be equipped with either (a) both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms, or (b) dual sensor smoke alarms (which contain both ionization and photoelectric smoke sensors).

Do not install an ionization smoke alarm in or near the kitchen because it is more  likely to create a false alarm during cooking.

Test your smoke alarms every month.

Install interconnected smoke alarms.

Install smoke alarms using house wiring with battery back-up.

Staying Safe From Storms in Your Home

1/29/2020 (Permalink)

Do you have a safety plan for your family in the event of a severe storm or tornado? Have you practiced your plan at least twice a year? There may be a time when your children may be at home alone.  Do they know what to do and where to go if no adults are present?  This may sound like a lot to prepare for but in the long run it will be well worth the effort, especially in the event of a severe storm.

1. Get as low as possible - completely underground is best.

2. Put as many barriers between you and the outside as possible.

Flying debris is what causes the most harm.

Being underground in a  storm cellar or basement is the best place to be.

A safe room or above-ground tornado shelter can be as good as an underground shelter.

If the above-mentioned safe areas are  not available, choose a small, interior closet; an interior bathroom; a hallway, or under the stairs.

Never leave your home in a vehicle when a tornado threatens.

Fire Safety During Winter Storms

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

Winter weather is officially upon us and now is a good time to think about fire safety during winter storms.  Did you know that half of all home heating fires happen in December, January and February?  Knowing what to do in the event of a storm may help save your family and your personal belongings.

  • Test all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms in your home at least once a month.
  • Plan two ways out of your home and keep your sidewalk and driveway free of ice and snow.
  • Make sure your house number is visible from the street so firefighters can locate your home.
  • Power can often times go out during high wind or ice storms.  Have battery-powered flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Keep up to day on winter weather by checking on the radio, television or social media for updates.
  • If your heat stops working bundle up with extra layers of clothing and blankets to keep warm.
  • Check on your neighbors.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you go to bed.

We hope these tips help keep you and your family safe but when problems arise and the things that matter most are on the line, you need the very best help on the line as well.  Contact  SERVPRO of Jefferson City at 573-635-5883.

Storm Damage - Staying Safe in a Tornado

12/26/2019 (Permalink)

home devastated by tornado This Jefferson City home reflects severe damage sustained by an EF-3 tornado that struck Jefferson City on May 22, 2019.

On the evening of May 22, 2019, at 11:43 p.m., Jefferson City was struck by an EF-3 tornado where it destroyed or greatly damaged a warehouse and car dealership.  As it moved into downtown Jefferson City it caused severe damage to numerous  homes and businesses and uprooted or snapped trees.  The path of this storm was 32.63 miles with a maximum path width of 1500 yards.

If there is any good news to devastation of this nature it is that only 33 people sustained injuries.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA)External there is no guaranteed safety during a tornado. Even the possibility of a tornado must be taken seriously.  You can survive a tornado if you follow safety precautions. Your SERVPRO of Jefferson City friends would like to share with you what to do in the event of a tornado or when you hear a tornado warning.  This information is offered by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/tornadoes/index.html

Winter Storm Damage

12/26/2019 (Permalink)

winter storm tips Are you prepared for winter storms?

Three of the most common threats of winter weather to the Jefferson City area are snow storms, sleet and freezing rain.  Snow storms range in a light precipitation of snow flurries all the way to blizzards which can produce winds over 35mph with snow and blowing snow, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less for at least 3 hours.

Sleet occurs when snowflakes only partially melt when they fall through a shallow layer of warm air. These slushy drops refreeze as they next fall through a deep layer of freezing air above the surface, and eventually reach the ground as frozen rain drops that bounce on impact.

Freezing rain occurs when snowflakes descend into a warmer layer of air and melt completely. When these liquid water drops fall through another thin layer of freezing air just above the surface, they don't have enough time to refreeze before reaching the ground. Because they are “supercooled,” they instantly refreeze upon contact with anything that is at or below 0 degrees C, creating a glaze of ice on the ground, trees, power lines, or other objects. A significant accumulation of freezing rain lasting several hours or more is called an ice storm.

Make sure you are winter weather ready and prepare your home for the cold conditions.  You don't want to be caught with costly damages due to not being prepared.

Working in the Elements.  How to Stay Safe When Winter Weather Arrives

When the snowing and blowing of cold winter weather arrives our SERVPRO of Jefferson City crew is often called to brave the elements.

Falls along with injuries can be a result of those winter weather elements.  Some of the most frequent reported injuries are from slips, trips and falls with injuries involving ice, sleet or snow.

A way to minimize your risk of falling while working outdoors include:

  • Taking extra time to plan your steps. Take a route that provides the best footing when it’s snowy and icy.
  • Wearing appropriate shoes. Boots with rough or heavy tread are good for walking in the snow
  • Watching for black ice. After freezing rain or melting snow, black ice often forms on roadways and sidewalks.  Familiarize yourself with black ice conditions and be prepared.
  • Walking cautiously once indoors. Entrances can become very slippery from people walking in with snowy shoes.

12/17/2019 (Permalink)

flooding in commercial business Let SERVPRO of Jefferson City be the one to help you with your commercial water damage

There are more causes for water damage to businesses than flooding from heavy spring rains or water backup from winter ice dams.  Some of the causes of water damage to commercial buildings occurs right inside the workplace.

  1. Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems – Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems.  While sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement.  This could easily damage inventory and business assets.
  2. Damaged Appliances and Equipment – This cause of commercial flood damage is common in businesses that have appliances and equipment that make use of water, such as restaurants or catering facilities.
  3. Broken Pipes and Plumbing– Just like in a residence. If the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.
  4. Backed up Sewer Lines – This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated black water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City hopes you never have to deal with these types of damages, but we want you to know that if damages do occur we're  available to get you back up and running.  Give us a call 24/7 at 573-635-5883.

Water Damage from a Broken Toilet Water Supply Line

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

Air movers at work to help reduce water damage dry out time

The first 24 hours following a water incident are the most important in preventing secondary or permanent water damage.  Within four hours of loss notification, SERVPRO of Jefferson City will be on-site to help ensure water damage is handled properly.  This Jefferson City home suffered damage from a break in the toilet’s water supply line, resulting in water damage to the home’s family room carpeting.

After a thorough inspection of the property, our SERVPRO professionals took the necessary steps to protect the home from further damage by extracting the excess water, then prepare for drying.

The water extraction process involved our SERVPRO professionals bringing in air movers, also known as “industrial air blowers”, “commercial blower fans”, or floor drying fans. The air movers were used to increase the air circulation which speeds up the water evaporation and reduces drying time.   Drying time was monitored, with the results consistently communicated to the homeowner throughout the monitoring process.  Air movers are an essential tool mitigating water damage as they reduce the water damage dry out time to the carpet and floors, as well as wall cavities behind the drywall.

Flood Insurance May Not Be an Option for Your Business

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

You read that correctly. Flood insurance may not be an option. In some situations, it is a requirement. Financial institutions, investors and others expect you to protect their investments and property. They will not leave the insurance decision in your hands. Sometimes, it’s one of the costs of doing business.  Insurance companies distinguish between water damage and floods. Rising water causes flood damage.

Typical examples are:

  • Overflowing rivers and streams
  • Storm surge on large bodies of water
  • Local Flooding due to heavy rain or blocked storm drains
  • Runoff from melting ice and snow

Weather, plumbing and fire sprinklers are common sources of water damage. A standard commercial insurance policy covers the cost of these repairs. It offers no coverage for floods. The following are situations that may require a business to have insurance.

  1. The Federal Government funded, backed, or insured a business mortgage.

If your business is in a flood zone, the government requires you to have flood insurance. It’s the law. If a flood destroys the business, they want to get paid.

  1. Other mortgage lenders may require the insurance.

Lenders want to protect their investment as well. They may even want the insurance for businesses near flood zones.

  1. Investors may demand insurance.

If there is a flood, the investor’s investment is at risk. It is reasonable for them to expect the protection of their investment.

  1. Certain customers and vendors may require insurance.

A distribution business ships inventory belonging to their customer. Other businesses may hold inventory consigned by a vendor. Both parties may want insurance protection for their inventory.

The Flood Happened and the Damage Is Extensive

What is Performed with a Mold Remediation Protocol

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson City - Here to help you with your mold remediation process- 573-635-5883

SERVPRO of Jefferson City will do a brief walk through of your home or business to inspect for possible mold growth. This is done to help you understand what will need to be done to remove any mold

If we suspect mold is present, we will contact a local trusted vendor to do a complete inspection. The vendor we use is licensed to identify types of mold and the amount of mold that is present.  Our vendor will put together a full protocol which involves the following:

Interview – Review and discussion with the home or business owner of the property of current conditions which has led to the claim.

Site Assessment – A physical site assessment of the Property in the area(s) of concern to: visually assess the damage(s), retrieve temperature and RH readings, take air and direct samples for mold (if applicable), and gather room dimension to create room/floor drawings to identify the location(s) of concern.

  • Air Sampling – The purpose of non-viable spore trap air sampling is to provide an approximation of the airborne microbial (fungal) spore concentrations. A minimum of one control sample is typically taken outside the most common used entrance into the building, then one or more air samples are collected in the areas of concern within the building. Elevated airborne spore concentrations may indicate an indoor microbial reservoir(s), or that cleaning of personal effects or the HVAC system(s), is a necessary component of a microbial remediation plan.
  • Direct sampling – The purpose of direct sampling is to identify the type and concentration of microbial spores present on affected materials identified with suspect visible microbial growth. The sampling results are also used for reference for source contamination when air samples are taken.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke Alarms Can Save Lives.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City wants you to stay safe and according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) smoke alarms, when properly installed, can help save your life.

In homes, smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and on every level, including the basement.

Alarms should be tested monthly using the test button.  Alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years.  Other alarms need batteries replaced every year and the unit replaced every ten years.  If the alarm chirps signaling low battery, take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately, and never disable or remove the battery from the alarm.

If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross.

Keep your family save and create a fire emergency plan and conduct regular fire drills.  More tips on what to do before, during or after a fire are available at this American Red Cross site:   https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/fire.html

3 Reasons Why Commercial Properties Need Fire Sprinkler Systemsms

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

It is common knowledge that most commercial buildings have fire sprinkler systems that work to prevent fire damage. However, many do not realize how important these fixtures are in the case of fire. In fact, mounting evidence shows that this form of fire protection is more effective than many give it credit for.

If you are thinking about investing in new fire sprinkler systems, consider the ways that commercial sprinkler systems can benefit your building in case of fire:

Sprinkler Systems Are Virtually Fault-Free
In a recent study conducted on fires, the researchers discovered that fire sprinkler systems operated during 91% of all reported structure fires large enough to activate the systems. Ultimately, nine times out of 10, the sprinkler systems worked. Typically, the reason sprinkler systems stop working due to a lack of maintenance. This fact drives home the importance of regularly repairing your commercial fire sprinkler systems and replacing them if necessary.

Fire Sprinklers are Capable of Cutting Potential Losses in Half
It’s no secret that fires can result in devastating damage to both the structure of the building and the people that are trapped inside. Another recent study found that when paired with early warning systems, automatic fire sprinklers help to reduce property damage, injuries, and loss of life by over 50%. Those are numbers you just can’t ignore!

Fire Sprinklers Help Save Lives
Perhaps one of the most important things that fire sprinklers do is help to lower the risk of death and injury during devastating structure fires. According to a study from the National Fire Protection Association, there has been no record of more than two lives lost inside of a building with a full sprinkler protection that was well maintained and fully functioning.

As you can see, having a full system sprinkler system is a crucial part of fire protection for commercial buildings. If you already have a sprinkler system in place, make sure your fire alarm inspections are up to date and your fire protection equipment is functioning properly. Fire alarm inspections can mean life or death — make sure your equipment is working when it counts.

Fire Extinguishers In Your Home

2/5/2019 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers can save lives.

Do you need a fire extinguisher in your home?  The answer is yes.  And you must know when and how to operate it.  Portable fire extinguishers can be life and property saving tools when used correctly.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests remembering the word PASS:

Pull the pin.  Hold the nozzle pointing away form you and release the locking mechanism.

Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side.

Read the instructions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out.  Remember, extinguishers do have limitations.  It is also important to ensure you have the correct type of extinguisher for your facility.  To find more information on choosing the appropriate class of extinguisher, please visit the NFPA website at nfpa.org

Why your Business Wants an IICRC Certified Restoration Company

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Choose a restoration company that is IICRC certified.

When water damage impacts your commercial property, you want professionals to help get you back in business. SERVPRO of Jefferson City works closely with insurance companies to get you back up and running in a quick manner.  As business leaders know, contacting a professional water damage restoration company is typically the first step to restoring your property. However, many individuals do not know how to select the most exceptional, ethical company. If this is the case for you, it's important to know that hiring an IICRC-certified company will prove advantageous. Learn more about why this is the case by reviewing this short outline:

  • What Is The IICRC?

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a professional certification organization within the restoration, cleaning, and inspection industries.

  • How Do Companies Obtain Certification?

To obtain IICRC certification, water remediation companies have to conform to specific criteria. Some of the criteria include:

  1. Provide consumers with accurate data
  2. Conduct business processes with integrity and honesty
  3. Ensure that a trained technician is present for all work assignments
  4. Ensure that a continuing education program is in place
  5. Maintain policies for written complaints
  6. Hold liability insurance
  • Why Choose an IICRC-Certified Company?

There is a wide variety of forms water damage can take. Some of them include flooding, a burst pipe, sump pump overflow, and sewage backup. Irrespective of the cause; however, the end-result is substantive damage. In fact, standing liquid can lead to severe property damage as well as mold infestation. For this reason, it's essential that you attain water damage restoration services from a qualified team of professionals.

Doing a Google search for the key phrase "water damage restoration" will produce over 500,000 results. To narrow your selection, it's a good idea to limit your search to companies that have obtained their certification from the IICRC. Because the IICRC is efficient in establishing reference guides and industry standards regarding water damage restoration and mold removal, companies that have been certified by the organization will likely offer you the excellent, effective services you want.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City also offers 24/7/365 service for their customers. You can call 573-635-5883 for your commercial emergency.

Water damage at Landmark United Pentecostal Church

You never know when the unexpected is going to happen, and when a water line breaks (of course it’s a given that it’s unexpected) it could range from a small trickle to a full-blown disaster.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City received a phone call from the Landmark United Pentecostal Church, located in Jefferson City, that they had discovered water in their church that had extended to the hallway and numerous rooms.  It’s was important to us to help get this church up and running again.  There are many needs to be met in a church and being displaced for too long a time is certainly something a pastor and his congregation want to avoid.  Our crew was quick to load up and take care of the water removal and drying process.  SERVPRO franchises are trained and understand how to manage the drying process.  We provide our state-of-the art equipment and the latest technology to quickly and thoroughly dry carpet and flooring in order to help prevent secondary water damage.  Disinfecting and deodorizing are important process as well.  We’re glad Landmark United Pentecostal called us.

If you own a commercial business, or a home, please don’t hesitate to give us a call when the unexpected comes your way.  Remember, we’re faster to any size disaster.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City, 573-635-5883.

10 Steps To Protect Your Home From Storm Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Call the Cleanup Team

Every spring, we here in the Midwest prep for storm season.

A lot of damage can occur as the result of storms and we at SERVPRO are happy to come to the rescue of your property with any water damage you receive.  However, we'd much prefer you minimize damage to your home and family by following some of these quick and easy precautions.

      1. REPLACE MISSING OR DAMAGED                    SHINGLES

If a shingle is damaged, it’s more likely to break free. If it’s missing, well then you’ve got a gap for wind to get under and do even more damage.

     2.  REPAIR LOOSE SIDING

The same rules as roofing apply to siding: it’s important to ensure your siding isn’t damaged.

   3.  KEEP YOUR GUTTERS CLEAR

Make sure your gutters are free-flowing and your downspouts flow away from your foundation.

Water damage or flooding is one of the quickest ways to devalue your home. So ensuring your gutters are clear is the first line of defense in helping water to flow away from your home.

      4. ENSURE WATER CAN FLOW AWAY                   FROM YOUR HOME

The grade of your lot should keep water flowing away from your home and into a ditch, drain, or some other proper retention area.

  1. KEEP YOUR SUMP PUMP IN WORKING ORDER

Before Spring rains start up, check whether your sump pump is in working order. If you want to feel extra-secure, having a backup sump pump is a sure-fire way to prevent basement flooding.

  1. ENSURE PROPER SEALING OF DOORS AND WINDOWS

Wind only needs a small opening to get underneath something like a shingle or siding and rip it off. And in the event of tornadic winds, a small opening in your windows or doors could enlarge and allow enough wind inside to compromise your home’s roof.

  1. CHECK FOR LOOSE FENCE POSTS

Wind will surprise you. Anything that’s not nailed down is a liability, and that includes fence posts, which are often forgotten or ignored in homeowner’s storm-prep.

  1. REGULARLY TRIM YOUR TREES

Problem tree limbs can damage your home, a vehicle, or even your neighbor’s property. Regularly trimming the trees on your property is an excellent way to protect your roof and windows.

  1. WALK AROUND YOUR PROPERTY

A lot of people don’t have the time or skills to check and/or repair everything on their property before storm season kicks up. But, if you know a storm is coming, there are some very basic steps you can take to minimize its impact.

Like identifying the items around your property that could become projectiles. That means lawn furniture, tools, flower pots, or other yard debris. Do yourself a favor and move those items to a garage, a shed, or indoors.

  1. KEEP A GENERATOR ON HAND

A bad storm could potentially knock out power to your home for a couple of hours — or days. Having a generator on standby could go a long way towards ensuring you don’t lose your food, or the livability of your home until power is restored.

MOST IMPORTANTLY

Severe Weather Preparedness

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Jefferson City. Always ready to help with storm damage.

When you live in the SERVPRO of Jefferson City area you know that storms are inevitable and preparing for a storm is important for your safety, whether at your home or business.  Check out the following tips:

Before The Storm:
* Develop a disaster plan for you and your family at home, work, school and when outdoors.
* Identify a safe place to take shelter.
* Have frequent drills.
* Know the county in which you live or visit so you know if your area is under posted bulletins and warnings.
* Keep a highway map nearby to follow storm movement from weather bulletins.
* Have a portable Weather Radio with a warnings alarm tone and battery back-up to receive warnings.
* Listen to TV or radio for weather information, or go online.
* Check the weather forecast before leaving for extended periods outdoors. Watch for signs of approaching storms.
* If severe weather threatens, check on people who are elderly, very young or physically or mentally disabled.
* Don't forget about pets.

During A Tornado Warning:

* If you're in a house with a basement: Get into the basement and under sturdy protection (like a work bench or table) or cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. Avoid being under heavy objects on the floor above you (i.e. refrigerator).
* If you're in a house with NO basement: Avoid windows and go to a room in the center of the building, like a bathroom or closet, under a stairwell or in an interior hallway with no windows. Crouch as low as possible to the floor facing down and cover your head with your hands. Surround yourself with pillows or couch cushions.
* If you're in a mobile home: Get out! Even tied down, a mobile home is not safe in a tornado.
* If you're outdoors: Find a sturdy building if possible. If not, lie flat and face-down on low ground, protecting the back or your head with your arms. Stay away from objects that could be moved by the wind.
* If you're in a vehicle: Park the automobile out of traffic lanes. Get to a sturdy building, or get to low ground and lie flat, face-down. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges.
* If you're at a school: Listen to teaching staff or administration for directions. Auditoriums, gyms and other free-span rooms are not an ideal shelter. Go to interior rooms on the lowest floor but avoid halls that open to the outside in any direction. Stay away from glass. Crouch and cover your head with your hands.
* If you're at a shopping center, hospital or factory: Go to interior rooms and halls on the lowest floor. Stay away from glass-enclosed places or areas with wide-span roofs. Crouch down and cover your head with your hands.

Preparation is key.  Have a plan.  Create a communications plan for your home and business.  Share your plan with family and co-workers.

Fires are Preventable

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

This can be prevented

Fires are Preventable

Safety precautions are a must in preventing fires.  The following are a list of tips on home fire prevention suggested by Ready.gov.

  • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately and do not run cords under rugs or furniture.
  • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
  • Immediately shutoff, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker.

Fireplaces and Woodstoves

  • Inspect and clean woodstove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
  • Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks.
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.

Smoke Inhalation Dangers

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Kitchens are a common place for smoke inhalation.

Did you know the number one cause of death related to fires is smoke inhalation?  Smoke inhalation occurs when you breathe in harmful smoke particles and gases.  Inhaling harmful smoke can inflame your lungs and airway, causing them to swell and block oxygen.  The results can be deadly, leading to acute respiratory distress and respiratory failure.

Smoke inhalation commonly happens when you get trapped in a contained area, such as a kitchen or home, near a fire.  Most fires occur in the home, often from cooking, fireplaces and space heaters, electrical malfunctions, and smoking.

If you or someone else has been in a fire and exposed to smoke or showing signs of smoke inhalation, such as trouble breathing, singed nostril hair, or burns, call 911 for immediate medical care.

According to the NFPA, once the fire alarm goes off “you could have less than two minutes to get out safely.”  Your friends at SERVPRO of Jefferson City want you to stay safe, informed and prepared to help ensure you are ready for any disaster that comes your way.

ERP's - Be Prepared for Any Type of Disaster

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Schedule your ERP today.

When you are the one in charge of daily operations of a Salvation Army shelter the last thing you want, especially during bitterly cold winter temperatures, is for your facility to be unavailable to those in need of warmth and shelter.  The Salvation Army of Jefferson City provides shelter at their Center of Hope, a 31-bed shelter for homeless men, women and families with children.  And no matter the temperature, the Salvation Army wants to make sure they are prepared to accept anyone homeless at any time.

After a few route visits with Lt. Christopher White at the Salvation Army administrative office, we discussed the idea of preparing an EMERGENCY READY PROFILE (ERP) to help minimize business interruption in the event of a disaster at their shelter.  He was quickly on board with the idea and a date was scheduled to meet and prepare the comprehensive document containing critical information about his administrative office and shelter, including emergency contact information, shut-off valve locations and priority areas.

Preparation is the key and the SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile will help ensure you and your business are “Ready for whatever happens.””

The ERP is a no-cost assessment that requires a short amount of time.  Call your SERVPRO of Jefferson City, 573-635-5883, to schedule an Emergency READY Profile at your office.

Help Prevent Winter Storm Damage

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Create A Winter Storm Preparation List

Winter storms can be treacherous. They can last for several days and be accompanied by high winds, heavy snowfall, and cold temperatures.   Your home is not only a place for warmth and shelter, it is also an investment.  Taking care of your home for both these reasons is important.

Remove Ice Dams

  • Ice dams can form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. Remove an ice dam as soon as it is found to help prevent damage.

Tips for Plumbing

  • Shut off your water valves on faucets outdoors, drain water from pipes and disconnect garden hoses.
  • Let water trickle through faucets, particularly if pipes are running through unheated areas.
  • Use insulation sleeves on exposed plumbing pipes.
  • Air seal plumbing penetrations and holes in outside walls and the home’s foundations with caulk.
  • Prop cabinet doors open so that warm indoor air helps to keep pipes warm.
  • Set your thermostat to a constant temperature during the coldest days and nights to keep pipes warm.

If winter weather causes water damage to your home, remember that SERVPRO of Jefferson City is a phone call away at 573-635-5883, 24/7.

Transitioning Your Home from Winter to Spring

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Any Day, SERVPRO Any Season

The days are getting longer, the storms of winter are ever slowly creeping past us.  Spring will soon be in the air.  Wildflowers will appear, windows will be opened to let in fresh air, snow will melt, and streams will swell with water.  It sounds poetically beautiful.   However, “swell with water” does not ring quite so beautifully to a homeowner whose home has fared poorly from harsh winter days to spring.   Now is the time to see how your home has fared through the ice and snow and determine if any repairs need to be done.  Here’s your checklist.

  1. Check your gutters for any remaining ice.
  2. Check any and all exterior vents
  3. Check your home’s foundation for any cracks or areas of pooling water.
  4. Inspect your roof for missing shingles, and check roof vents for damage to the spouts or base.
  5. Check visual pipes both exterior and interior for any breaks. Also check around it for any water or water damage.

Winter weather, or spring weather, beautiful days or stormy days,  we’re here to help with any damage.  Call SERVPRO of Jefferson City at 573-635-5883.

One Person Can Make All The Difference

Tabitha Ferris - Project Manager

In the fast-moving world of real estate, one little glitch can make or break sealing a deal.  And at times, if there is a serious glitch involved, a realtor might be lucky enough to have that one person step in to save the day for all parties involved.

Tabetha Farris (Tabby), SERVPRO of Jefferson City’s project manager, was that one person.  She put an agent’s clients at ease during an incredibly stressful time.  The home they were purchasing was vacant, and within 3 days of closing, a sizable water leak in the basement was discovered.   The agent was so pleased with the work Tabetha did. She shared the fantastic and extremely professional job Tabby did explaining the details of the restoration process to her clients, further complimenting Tabby on her professionalism and putting her clients at ease.  She worked tirelessly communicating between both buyers, sellers and their agents with status updates.  Tabby’s efforts strengthened the realtor’s opinion of SERVPRO of Jefferson City and she truly believes Tabby saved the sale of the house, further stating that SERVPRO of Jefferson City is now listed as a primary contact in her phone.   We at SERVPRO of Jefferson City are so proud to have Tabby on our team.

Don't Get Swept Away in Missouri Weather

Be prepared for whatever weather we get in Missouri!
Be prepared for whatever weather we get in Missouri!

We all know how crazy the weather in Missouri can be at any time. There is never a better time to be prepared than before the storm hits! Be sure you know the difference between a watch and a warning.

Make sure your prepared with these tips from ready.gov

Flood Watch = “Be Aware.” Conditions are right for flooding to occur in your area.

Steps to Take

  • Turn on your TV/radio. You will receive the latest weather updates and emergency instructions.
  • Know where to go. You may need to reach higher ground quickly and on foot.
  • Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit. Include a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.

Prepare Your Home

  • Bring in outdoor furniture and move important indoor items to the highest possible floor. This will help protect them from flood damage.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances and do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. You could be electrocuted.
  • If instructed, turn off your gas and electricity at the main switch or valve. This helps prevent fires and explosions.

Flood Warning = "Take Action!" Flooding is either happening or will happen shortly.

Steps to Take

  • Move immediately to higher ground or stay on high ground.
  • Evacuate if directed.
  • Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down and 2 feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.

After the water recedes and your home has sustained damage don’t forget SERVPRO of Jefferson City is always here to help!

Signs That You Need To Hire A Water Damage Repair Professional

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

Avoid entering a room that has a water-logged ceiling.

Your Jefferson City area home was flooded.  There’s little doubt about it. You arrived home from work to find puddles of water on the floor with objects floating about, all caused by a broken pipe. You turned off the water to your Jefferson City home and are about to call in a water damage repair professional to take on the cleanup job. But do you? Or is it something that you can handle yourself? Let’s go over some of the criteria in order to help you make this decision.

Your Jefferson City Basement Is Submerged In Several Inches of Water

A submerged basement can lead to a number of problems, all of which an expert water damage repair company can deal with. They can pump out the water, work with a plumbing company to repair the problem (if it was a damaged pipe), and then restore everything in your basement until it looks just as it did before the flood.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City experts can even identify secondary problems, such as the beginnings of mold before they even begin.

Your Carpeting Is Soaked

It can be tricky to remove water from carpeting. The pad underneath is most likely soaked and will probably need to be discarded. Since mold can easily grow in these waterlogged conditions, you want to call in a water damage restoration company to restore your carpeting back to how it used to be. There’s no need to rip out the carpeting and have a new one installed if SERVPRO of Jefferson City could save it!

Your Ceilings Are Sagging

A sagging ceiling is a sign that water has ruined the structural integrity of your building. You should never go into a room with a sagging ceiling because you don’t want to be underneath if it were to collapse. If you see problems of this magnitude, then you need to call your local water damage repair company SERVPRO of Jefferson City. They will be able to remove the water, shore up the ceiling, and then conduct any necessary restoration.

You Want the Experts to Handle the Job

Sometimes you just don’t have the time to deal with a flooded basement no matter how minor the incident.  If this is the case, then go ahead and call SERVPRO of Jefferson City.  It’s their duty to help. Call for your free inspection today, 573-635-5883.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a pervasive Odor in your Jefferson City, Missouri, Area Home

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

This picture depicts soot residue after a home fire.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jefferson City will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does Your Jefferson City, Missouri Area Home Have A Mold Problem?

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

Jefferson City, Missouri, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Jefferson City area Residents: Follow These Mold Safety Tips If you Suspect Mold

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

Be careful! Without proper training, you could be spreading mold throughout your home. This picture depicts a mold containment procedure.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of  Jefferson City for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

<top>Water Damage, Flood Damage, Sewage Backups - Jefferson City MO - Water Restoration - Commercial and Residential

Whether a storm passes or the upstairs toilet overflows, your home may suffer water damage that is difficult to repair. There are many things you can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats.

Floods can carry pathogens and water damage left alone long enough may become a breeding ground for mold.

Sewage backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

The main reason why a building is sensitive to water damage is because moisture can be difficult to detect. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall.

Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight. Reacting quickly enough, clothes and furniture may be saved. However, there can be electrical and other hazards when entering a building that has recently been flooded.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage.

Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. (For example, black water losses like sewage backups or flood damage.) These porous items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes.

Our technicians can locate hidden pockets of moisture using specialized equipment. There are some materials that may not feel wet on the outside.

When these moisture pockets are found, our technicians will expose them to air by removing any drywall or other materials in the way. Our technicians will monitor and document the drying process to ensure your property is back to normal.

Read more about the typical water damage restoration process.

Our highly trained technicians are ready to respond immediately to flood or water damage at your Jefferson City, MO, area property.  We also offer Commercial Services to our local businesses.

Please follow our tips outlined in the Water Damage Tips—Until Help Arrives Guide to protect yourself and your property.

Water, and their Category-SERVPRO of Jefferson City

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

If your rubber ducky needs rescued, SERVPRO of Jefferson City is just a phone call away at 573-635-5883.

Our approach to treating water damage in Jefferson City, MO homes depends on which category it falls into.

CAT 1 or Clean Water

Clean water is just that- water that has come from a source that is not contaminated. Examples of this would be a pipe bursting or a refrigerator leak. Also, if you have a leak that allows rainwater in through your roof, it is considered clean. Although clean water can cause significant damage, it is not considered hazardous to human health as there are no microbes in the water.  The biggest hazard clean water presents is if the area that has been damaged is not properly cleaned and dried. This can result in mold and fungus growth.

CAT 2 or Gray Water

Gray water is water that is slightly contaminated, either because of the nature of the source or because of neglect. For example, clean water can become “gray” water if it is left untreated for an extended period time. When a toilet or washing machine overflows, the resulting water would be considered gray because of its source. Toilet overflows containing urine only are considered gray.

CAT 3 or Black Water

CAT 3 water is highly dangerous to human health. Black water can include toxic materials such as bacterial diseases, chemicals, pesticides, microbes and more. Sewage based components such as bacteria, fungi, feces, viruses and parasites. Black 3 water situations are usually caused by sewage backups or overflows and flooding.

Since the human eye cannot see bacteria, it is not always obvious whether the water in your home is a CAT 2 or CAT 3.  If you experience a flood from a heavy rain, the water may look “clean,” but if there is any ground water that has backed up into your home as a result, there may be invisible microbes lurking in the water.

Any water damage that is not treated correctly will eventually elevate to the next category. Even a simple pipe burst can turn into a biohazard and mold issue if not treated. If you have any water damage in your Jefferson City area home, call SERVPRO of Jefferson City!

Storm Damage doesn't always mean high winds, and rain!

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

As you know, winter here in Missouri can be quite unpredictable. We may enjoy milder, fall like temperatures for a couple of days, but before you know it, we are shivering in the snow! Here at SERVPRO of Jefferson City, we understand this, and believe the best defense for your home or business is to be prepared. We are always ready to respond when you find the need arises, however; there are some steps that you can take to prevent or minimize the damage.

Preparedness tips before a severe winter storm

According to SEMA, Missourians can prepare for winter by:

- Creating a family emergency plan, and emergency kit with bottled water, along with canned and dried food that can be prepared without cooking in case of a power outage.

- Add the following supplies to your disaster supply kit: rock salt to melt ice on walkways, sand to improve traction, snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.

- Secure an alternate fuel source such as firewood or a generator. Make sure your fireplace functions properly. If you have a generator, make sure you have fuel and that it functions properly. Only operate the generator outdoors. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.

-Create a winter car kit in the trunk of your car. This includes: windshield scraper and small broom, flashlight, blanket, spare radio with batteries, snacks or energy type food, water, jumper cables, flares and matches, shovel, sand or shingles to give tires traction, extra hats, socks, and mittens, first aid kit, and fluorescent distress flag.

- Learn WHERE your water shut off valve is located, and HOW to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.

Some long term preparations include winterizing your home, barn/shed, or business.  In order to extend the life of your fuel supply, it helps to insulate walls, attics, caulking and weather stripping doors and windows as well as installing storm windows or covering with plastic.  Clear rain gutters, repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on the home or other structure during a storm.  Insulate pipes with insulations or newspaper and plastic, and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing.  Keep a fire extinguisher on hand, and make sure everyone in the home or office knows how to use it. Fires are a risk during winter weather due to holiday activities as well as using alternate heating sources without taking necessary safety precautions.

What to do if you have unmet needs after a winter storm?

Throughout the "recovery period," SEMA states it is important to monitor local radio or television reports, or other media sources for information on where to go for emergency housing, food, first aid, clothing and financial assistance. SERVPRO partners with the American Red Cross, and can assist with contacting local chapters. If you find yourself with structural damage after the winter weather, such as fire, water damage, or other structural damages, call SERVPRO of Jefferson City. We can help with communicating with your insurance and other service providers, clean up, cleaning and storing items, repairs from fire/water, along with many other services.  Although we are located in Cole County, we cover many surrounding areas as well.  Don't hesitate to call if you have any questions! 573-635-5883, and of course, check us out on our Facebook page!

Protect your business from a Fire!

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

As a business owner, examining your risk and taking preventative measures as well as educating your employees on procedures can help reduce the damage to your facility.

Assess the risk that fire hazards may pose to your business. The National Fire Protection Association offers handbooks and other publications on the fire safety code in place for businesses.  You can also call your local Connecticut fire department and ask the fire marshal if they are available to make a visit and identify any risks.

Maintain your sprinkler system.  An  automatic sprinkler system will dramatically reduce the spread of a fire in your business as well as keep your employees and customers safe. Have your system properly maintained and inspected so that it works when you need it!

Check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Standard fire safety practices call for smoke detectors and fire extinguishers on every floor. Your best bet is multipurpose extinguishers, which will douse most small fires with ease, without shorting out your electronics.

Educate your employees. Make sure all employees are aware of your fire safety plan by conducting a yearly fire drill and educating new employees.  Training in how to use fire extinguishers should also be conducted.

By following these steps, if your Jefferson City, MO business does experience a fire, the damage to your building should be minimal. SERVPRO of Jefferson City can take care of the water and fire damage that results and get your business back up and running.

Winter Storms & Freezing Temps

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

We've had a few ice storms over the past few weeks and they present a unique set of challenges to Jefferson City homeowners.  The unpredictable nature of ice and sleet on roads can make it difficult to drive safely for even seasoned drivers.  Sidewalks, steps and your entire driveway may become so slippery that they are impassable.  The weight of the ice on tree limbs can cause them to break and fall, causing roof damage to homes. Ice might accumulate on your roof, and even make its way under shingles- dislodging and breaking them. This, combined with the warm weather that has followed the ice storms, puts homes at risk of water damage from roof leaks.

There's no escaping the snow, ice and freezing temperatures when you live in Missouri. Hopefully, your home won't be damaged by falling limbs or roof leaks. However, if you do have have a leak or hole in your roof, give us a call. Our team has the experience to handle Missouri winters and will come right out, assess the situation and restore your home from the damage.

Winter: Myth or Fact

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

In these cold temps, Will your tongue REALLY stick to a flagpole?? Let's bust some of the urban legends about dropping temps without having to try them out ourselves!

MYTH #1: We lose most of our body heat through our heads.

FALSE! Although this myth has been commonly accepted as a fact, even being written in the U.S. Army Survival Manual in 1970, modern science disagrees. You are no more likely to lose body heat from your head than from your arm. However, it is a place that often goes uncovered and thus, you may lose heat from your head because of that. So, follow Grandma's advice and wear a hat!

MYTH #2: Your vehicle tires will go flat.

TRUE! For every 10 degrees the air temperature changes, your tire pressure will drop 1 psi. So, keep an eye on your tires and be prepared to add some air to your tires if there is a sudden temperature drop!

MYTH #3: Mice will move in to your house when it gets cold.

TRUE! You may see signs of them all year round, however when the temps drop mice will go from visitor status to residents inside your home. Seal up cracks, especially where your electrical lines and pipes enter the home to make it a bit harder for mice to get in.

MYTH #4. If you stick your tongue to a flagpole, it will freeze there.

And the answer, according to the  livescience webpage is TRUE! They've done an in depth study and you can read the science of why this is true on their webpage. So, the next time someone triple dog dares you, politely decline!

What can be saved?

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

We go through the contents of a home on a piece by piece basis and while each item is a unique case, we do use a few factors to determine whether it gets boxed, sent to our facility for cleaning or put in the dumpster.

The type of water that has flooded the home is an important factor in determining what stays and what goes. Clean water does not pose as much of a health hazard as potentially contaminated water does. If there is concern that water is contaminated from sewage or chemicals, we are unlikely to suggest it be cleaned. It's not worth the risk.

Typically, porous fabrics such as mattresses, pillows, carpeting and particle board cannot be salvaged. They absorb water quickly and are breeding grounds for mold spores to grow.  However, there are cases in which we are able to clean area rugs and wood if we are called to the job quickly and the piece has not become oversaturated.

Our ability to be on the job quickly helps us minimize damage to personal possessions that have water damage. The perfect example of this is wooden furniture. It takes quite a fit of time for it to really absorb and become completely water logged. If you get  personal belongings out of the standing water and begin the drying process right away, you have a good chance of being able to save them.

Is mold covered on your insurance?

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

visible mold in a structure

With all of the attention on black mold and it's potential to be toxic to the health, many homeowner's don't want to take a chance when they spot mold. Luckily, not every mold job that we look at is in fact black mold.

There are several cases in which there is a mold infestation in the home that requires our services. It can be surprising to some homeowners to discover that their insurance policy does not cover mold.

Call your insurance agent if the language of the policy is confusing and you are unsure. Some policies contain clauses that exclude mold.  Some will cover mold removal only under certain circumstances.  Typically, if your policy does not include mold remediation it can be added onto the policy. It's a smart preventative measure that can save you thousands in the future.

Mold Facts

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours!

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today at SERVPRO of Jefferson City!

When winter strikes

1/29/2018 (Permalink)

This picture illustrates a roof with an Ice Dam

During the winter months, such as now, keep an eye out for snow accumulation on the downside of a higher level roof, where blowing snow will pile up. For safe snow removal, ask a roofing contractor for a referral.  Also, remove snow from basement stairwells, window wells, and walls to prevent water or moisture from penetrating walls. Also, keep attics well ventilated to maintain temperatures close to the outside, which will minimize the risk of dams forming.

Ensure pipes do not freeze and burst by keeping the heat in your home at an acceptable level, cover exposed pipes with insulation, sleeves, or wrapping and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

Or course, if water damage does occur in your home, immediately call SERVPRO of Jefferson City 573-635-5883 for water removal and restoration. We work with insurance companies as well as self pay.   Check us out on FB for more tips and fun!

There are many things you can do to help keep your home, and family safe. Having your heating system serviced regularly by a professional is a good way to ensure everything is working as it should. Cleaning around these areas is very important; make sure no dust or flammable items are near the ignition sources. This also applies to your dryers lint trap, it is important to remove the lint after EVERY use. A clogged lint trap is not only a fire risk, but it also reduces the efficiency of your dryer. In addition to keeping vents clean and free, remember to replace old, damaged or frayed appliance cords, and never force a three-pronged plug into a two-slot outlet or extension cord. When possible, it is best to avoid using outlet extenders or Plug-in bars, as they can quickly overload an electrical circuit. Candles, they may smell nice but they are a major fire hazard as well. There are many alternatives available instead of open flame candles. We also advise that you avoid smoking indoors; cigarettes are a known cause of house fires. Cigarettes should be disposed outside in a bucket of sand, or soaked in water prior to throwing them in the trash. Now, on to kitchen! Did you know FORTY ONE percent of home fires start in the kitchen? The number one prevention tip for the kitchen, NEVER leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the room turn off the oven. All it takes is a second for a fire to ignite. When using your oven, use a timer so you’ll remember that the oven is on. Do not cook when you are sleepy, have been drinking alcohol, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy. It is also very important that your cooking area is clean from any grease build up, and making sure there aren’t any flammable items near your stove or oven(Pot holders, Oven mitts, Wooden utensils, paper or plastic items, etc.). It is extremely crucial that you never use your oven to heat your home. A big step in prevention is installing smoke alarms near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside of bedrooms. Use the test button to check your alarms twice each month, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends replacing the batteries twice a year. You can help to prevent fires in your home. In an event where fire damage does occur in your home, don’t hesitate, give us a call. Our team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Jefferson City will help restore your home, “Like it never even happened.”

Water in Categories

You can prevent illness and minimize secondary damages by contacting your SERVPRO professionals right away!

When dealing with a water loss, it is important to know there is more in the water than just water! As stated in the previous blog, pathogens are carried in water, and the likelihood for microbial growth is greatly increased when coupled with the passage of time, and structural intrusion.  In dealing with water damages, there are 3 categories:  Category 1, 2 and 3.  Water health and safety conditions change with the passing of time, and it is for this reason, the most important factor in mitigating a water loss is response time.  When you notice a water leak, whether big or small, getting professional help quickly is key to preventing further damage, minimizing mitigation costs, and to prevent possible illness.  As water passes through such things as carpet and building structures, it becomes contaminated. Therefore, even a Category 1,  clean water damage, can become contaminated, Category 3 water, in just a matter of time.  This type of contaminated water requires increased safety methods for mitigating, and we are highly trained in this area.  For health reasons and to minimize loss, a quick response is imperative.  We can get to you faster when you call right away!

An Introduction : Water Has Many Faces

4/21/2017 (Permalink)

We love the joys of water, from recreation to hydration. But here at SERVPRO, we know the damages it can bring as well, and we are here for you.

Water -  life’s sustenance, the world’s most valuable resource, accounts for an estimated 70 % of the earth’s surface.  According to the USGS Water Science School, the adult human body contains up to 60 % water.   It is commonly known that it is necessary to consume a certain amount of water in order to survive and support cell growth as well as promote healthy digestion.  Ironically, water is also the leading cause for destruction and damage in North America (RSA, 2015).  Excessive amounts of water comes not only in the form of hurricanes, but most water damage actually occurs in building structures due to rain, construction defects, plumbing failures, damage from freezing and even improper maintenance.   Water is so very unique because it is the only natural substance that is found in 3 states – liquid, solid, and gas – at temperatures normal to the earth.   Often overlooked when it comes to thinking of the dangers of water, according to Restoration Sciences Academy (2015) it is also the single leading carrier of pathogens in the world today. Furthermore, the elements supporting microbial growth are always present; leaving only the addition of excessive moisture to create a destructive chain reaction in which microorganisms can multiply and cause structural deterioration, create odors, and potentially create serious health issues for building occupants.  For these reasons, it is very important to properly and professionally mitigate water damage after a loss.  All restorers should follow the standard of care for water restoration, IICRC.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City has this expertise, and we are here when you need us to help answer your questions and safety mitigate any damages from water that you may experience.

Winter Weather : What to do before and after

1/6/2017 (Permalink)

Don't let a winter storm stop you in your tracks! Our Emergency Readiness Profiles are NO COST , and can help get your home or business be prepared.

Emergency Planning to Keep Your Home Dry

12/21/2016 (Permalink)

If you see this, call us before it gets any worse !

Here at SERVPRO we see a lot of damage.  Our crews are out working hard to restore homes from fire, water, mold,  whatver the situation may be.  With the current  winter weather, water damage is on the rise.    We would like to share some information to keep homes safe, and in order to do this, having a plan and knowing what to look for is key.

Water damage can occur in homes in a variety of ways.  Homeowners should check for leaks throughout their houses, inspect pipes and connections in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Look under and around sinks and around bathtubs for any discolorations. Do not ignore connections to dishwashers or refrigerators with water and ice dispensers.

It is very important to make sure water is flowing properly down drains. If not, try clearing the drain with a plunger or an over the counter solution (there are also home made solutions you can google)  . If that does not work, call a professional for assistance.  In order to keep drains and pipes clear, follow simple steps such as disposing of cooking oil in a container rather than pouring down the drain,  never flush diapers and other inappropriate items down toilets, and be careful of what you put in your garbage disposal.  Eggs or potato peelings, for example would not be good to put in your disposal.  In addition, backflow valves should be installed in sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Check the floors around water heaters for wet spot.  This could indicate you have a rusted tank or other problem, which you would want to take care of right away before the damage gets worse.  If necessary, have the tank replaced as soon as possible.

A leak in the roof of your home and clogged gutters or downspouts can also lead to significant water damage inside your home. As soon as you notice a leak in your roof, or even signs of significant wear, have it inspected and repaired immediately.  In addition, keep all gutters and downspouts free of leaves and other debris that could cause back up water to leak into your house.

Owners in properties located in areas prone to flooding should give serious consideration to applying a waterproof coating or membrane to the exterior walls and installing watertight sheilds over doors, windows and other openings.

Or course, if water damage does occur in your home, immedately call SERVPRO of Jefferson City 573-635-5883 for water removal and restoration. We work with insurance companies as well as self pay, and NO out of pocket expenses would occur without homeowners prior approval.   Check us out on FB for more tips and fun!

Jefferson City and Mid MO Smoke and Soot Cleanup

9/6/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home
