Be Flood Smart

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

Springtime brings warm weather, beautiful shrubs, flowers, and unfortunately, heavy rains and the increase for flooding.

Did you know that floods can cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  And that's something we in central Missouri are all too familiar with.  Spring rains can bring several inches of precipitation in just hours which can lead to severe flooding by oversaturating the ground, overfilling storm drains, or causing rivers to spill over their bank or levees.

We would like to offer a few flood safety tips for our SERVPRO of Jefferson City friends:

  • Be sure to step away away from floodwaters.  Anything above your ankles is dangerous.
  • If while driving you come upon a flooded road, turn around.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Children, by nature, are curious.  Keep them away from running water

Call the professionals if your home is the victim of a flood.  Floodwater can cause major damage, even if it is just a small amount of water.

Water Damage To Your Ceiling

9/16/2020 (Permalink)

The professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City know a water spot when they see one.  And if you happen to see one don’t be immediately alarmed that your roof is leaking.  Oftentimes a stain can be the result of drips in the attic from condensation on pipes.  There are many water lines that converge in the attic space: upstairs hot water heaters, plumbing, A/C lines.  Be aware that cracks can allow slow leaks in the attic crawl space which then could lead to stains on the ceiling.

Other signs to be on the lookout for are:

  • Musty odors
  • Discolored growths
  • Stains, streaks, shadows
  • Peeling ceiling or wall surfaces

Even if your ceiling doesn’t look bad now, be aware it doesn’t take much water to create a disaster. A red flag that your ceiling is at risk of failure are depressions around the fasteners; you will see tiny dimples forming on the ceiling because the drywall encompassing the nails or screws droops, leaving an inverted crater.  So, if you feel you might have water or mold damage to your ceilings, give the professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City a call at 573-635-5883.

SERVPRO is Fast to Work after Flash Floods

8/14/2020 (Permalink)

sludge left in a garage from a flash flood This flooded garage was created by flash floods.

On July 19, 2020, Jefferson City was hit with approximately five inches of severe flash flood waters, maybe better described as sludge, that produced as much as 24 inches in main level garages to just within inches of one homeowner's basement rafters.  Many of these home owners lived in areas that were not declared as flood plains, so needless to say, they were caught off guard by the sudden rush of waters into their homes.  As the phones of Jefferson City's SERVPRO were staying busy with customers, so too was our production team, as they next flew into action inspecting affected areas, extracting excess water and prepping the area for drying.  The monitoring process begins after this and all updates are communicated to the homeowner.

Water-Saving Tips

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that as much as 20% of a household's water usage is in the kitchen?  We have some quick and easy tips for saving water in the kitchen.

  • Purchase a low flow kitchen faucet.  Today's faucets have a flow rate of 1.5 GPM.  Older faucets, 5 GPM.
  • Use your dishwasher instead of hand washing dishes.  Make certain you have your dishwasher full.
  • Soak pot and pans. You'll use more water scrubbing under running water.
  • Steam or roast your vegetables rather than boiling.
  • Use washable spray mops and spot clean floors rather than mopping the entire floor.
  • Save your running water.  How many of us run tap water while waiting for our water to get hot or cold.  Instead, fill a pitcher of drinking water for the fridge or keep a bucket for watering your plants.
  • Fix leaks.  Fifteen thousand drops of water can make a gallon.  A leaky faucet can waste over 3000 gallons of water a year.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City wants to be the professional you can call at any time for water disasters.  We are available 24/7/365 - 573-635-5883.

Tips for Keeping your Bathroom Plumbing in Good Shape

7/15/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that no other room in a house contains as many pipes and plumbing fixtures as the bathroom?  The toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, hot and cold water lines, and drainpipes in any household bathroom handle an immense amount of work.

Never flush trash into the toilet

It's not a trash can.  Toilet paper should be the only paper being flushed.  Facial tissues are highly absorbent and can easily swell to block the pipes.  And wet-wipes can clump together and turn into a huge and difficult to remove clog - not only for the bathroom plumbing, but in the sewer line and municipal sewer system.

Protect the drains with drain covers

Basic mesh drain covers in the sink and shower protect the drainpipes from most of the problems leading to clogs.  Clean the covers periodically so they won't cause slow drainage.

Never use chemical drain cleaners on the drains

Store-bought drain cleaners are acidic chemicals and are only temporarily effective.  They can create severe damage to drainpipes, leading to corrosion.  If you can't eliminate a drain clog with a plunger or a hand-cranked drain snake, call for a professional plumber.

Replace Outdated pipes

Do you live in a home built before 1970?  There's a good chance you have outdated piping material in your bathroom.  It is recommended you replace lead, steel, iron and polybutylene pipes pipes, all of which are susceptible to corrosion and/or breakage.  Lead pipes are potentially hazardous for drinking water lines.

Schedule Routine Maintenance and Drain Cleaning

This is a great preventive and maintenance service to help your bathroom plumbing stay in top shape.    Regular cleaning using professional tools removes build-up in the drains, and this not only prevents clogs, it helps to stop pipe decay.  During drain cleaning, plumbers can also find out if there are hidden leaks or components that may need repairs or replacements.

You Can't Beat a Good Water Review

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

There's nothing more pleasing to a business owner than receiving a review from a customer who gives your production crew wonderful accolades such as the ones that follow:

Thankfully we had never had to experience any kind of damage in our home. We had left for the weekend and came home to a valve in our vanity was heavily spraying water all over. We fixed that immediately, but was left with a mess. Our insurance gave us names to call and hearing how SERVPRO came highly rated from my brother, we called them. They got things started drying out immediately and I stressed how important it was to do it fast and furious as we were having company coming from Seattle on Friday.....3 days away. DJ and Jeanne did an amazing job! Jeanne even made a special trip herself in the dark and cold to bring a new dehumidifier. I felt bad, but she was very professional about it. DJ was also very nice. I enjoyed his personality and how knowledgeable he is.  -Rita

Commercial Water Damage and Causes - Let SERVPRO restore your business

12/17/2019 (Permalink)

flooding in commercial business Let SERVPRO of Jefferson City be the one to help you with your commercial water damage

There are more causes for water damage to businesses than flooding from heavy spring rains or water backup from winter ice dams.  Some of the causes of water damage to commercial buildings occurs right inside the workplace.

  1. Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems – Some older office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems.  While sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement.  This could easily damage inventory and business assets.
  2. Damaged Appliances and Equipment – This cause of commercial flood damage is common in businesses that have appliances and equipment that make use of water, such as restaurants or catering facilities.
  3. Broken Pipes and Plumbing– Just like in a residence. If the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could be the result.
  4. Backed up Sewer Lines – This is another cause of commercial water damage that often catches business owners by surprise. Should the sewer line to your building back up or become damaged, realize the potential dangers of contaminated black water which can cause health effects and ruin products and office furnishings.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City hopes you never have to deal with these types of damages, but we want you to know that if damages do occur we're  available to get you back up and running.  Give us a call 24/7 at 573-635-5883.

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors, which may be an indicator of mold presence.
  • Evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

All the above may require a qualified Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional to offer their expertise to inspect for mold growth and water damage problems.

Don’t let the possibility of mold after a rainy season put you in an unpleasant situation.  Instead, let the professionals at SERVPRO of Jefferson City take charge of the situation.  Call us at 573-635-5883.

Water Damage - What you can do before SERVPRO Arrives

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

We'll for sure be faster to any size disaster but also know that you can begin the process yourself before we arrive.  Read on for some helpful tips.

1. Shut off your water source. Before water mitigation can begin make sure the situation isn't getting any worse.  If you have a pipe with a leak or a burst pipe, make sure your water has been shut off and if possible, have your pipe fixed.

2. Begin the extraction process.  Grab your mop, mop bucket and plenty of towels to start the process.  SERVPRO will begin the extraction immediately upon arrival, but the sooner you can start the process on your own the less damage you will have.

3.  Remove furniture and contents. If you have a dry area to move your furniture and contents then start the process as soon as possible.  Mold growth can begin if your belongings sit in water for too long.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City knows how disruptive water damage can be for your home or business.  Our team is trained and equipped to manage the drying process from start to finish using professional extraction and drying equipment. Contact us at (573) 635-5883 for any size water emergency.

Water Damage from a Broken Toilet Water Supply Line

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

Air movers at work to help reduce water damage dry out time

The first 24 hours following a water incident are the most important in preventing secondary or permanent water damage.  Within four hours of loss notification, SERVPRO of Jefferson City will be on-site to help ensure water damage is handled properly.  This Jefferson City home suffered damage from a break in the toilet’s water supply line, resulting in water damage to the home’s family room carpeting.

After a thorough inspection of the property, our SERVPRO professionals took the necessary steps to protect the home from further damage by extracting the excess water, then prepare for drying.

The water extraction process involved our SERVPRO professionals bringing in air movers, also known as “industrial air blowers”, “commercial blower fans”, or floor drying fans. The air movers were used to increase the air circulation which speeds up the water evaporation and reduces drying time.   Drying time was monitored, with the results consistently communicated to the homeowner throughout the monitoring process.  Air movers are an essential tool mitigating water damage as they reduce the water damage dry out time to the carpet and floors, as well as wall cavities behind the drywall.

Signs That You Need To Hire A Water Damage Repair Professional

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

Avoid entering a room that has a water-logged ceiling.

Your Jefferson City area home was flooded.  There’s little doubt about it. You arrived home from work to find puddles of water on the floor with objects floating about, all caused by a broken pipe. You turned off the water to your Jefferson City home and are about to call in a water damage repair professional to take on the cleanup job. But do you? Or is it something that you can handle yourself? Let’s go over some of the criteria in order to help you make this decision.

Your Jefferson City Basement Is Submerged In Several Inches of Water

A submerged basement can lead to a number of problems, all of which an expert water damage repair company can deal with. They can pump out the water, work with a plumbing company to repair the problem (if it was a damaged pipe), and then restore everything in your basement until it looks just as it did before the flood.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City experts can even identify secondary problems, such as the beginnings of mold before they even begin.

Your Carpeting Is Soaked

It can be tricky to remove water from carpeting. The pad underneath is most likely soaked and will probably need to be discarded. Since mold can easily grow in these waterlogged conditions, you want to call in a water damage restoration company to restore your carpeting back to how it used to be. There’s no need to rip out the carpeting and have a new one installed if SERVPRO of Jefferson City could save it!

Your Ceilings Are Sagging

A sagging ceiling is a sign that water has ruined the structural integrity of your building. You should never go into a room with a sagging ceiling because you don’t want to be underneath if it were to collapse. If you see problems of this magnitude, then you need to call your local water damage repair company SERVPRO of Jefferson City. They will be able to remove the water, shore up the ceiling, and then conduct any necessary restoration.

You Want the Experts to Handle the Job

Sometimes you just don’t have the time to deal with a flooded basement no matter how minor the incident.  If this is the case, then go ahead and call SERVPRO of Jefferson City.  It’s their duty to help. Call for your free inspection today, 573-635-5883.

<top>Water Damage, Flood Damage, Sewage Backups - Jefferson City MO - Water Restoration - Commercial and Residential

Whether a storm passes or the upstairs toilet overflows, your home may suffer water damage that is difficult to repair. There are many things you can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats.

Floods can carry pathogens and water damage left alone long enough may become a breeding ground for mold.

Sewage backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

The main reason why a building is sensitive to water damage is because moisture can be difficult to detect. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall.

Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight. Reacting quickly enough, clothes and furniture may be saved. However, there can be electrical and other hazards when entering a building that has recently been flooded.

SERVPRO of Jefferson City can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage.

Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. (For example, black water losses like sewage backups or flood damage.) These porous items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes.

Our technicians can locate hidden pockets of moisture using specialized equipment. There are some materials that may not feel wet on the outside.

When these moisture pockets are found, our technicians will expose them to air by removing any drywall or other materials in the way. Our technicians will monitor and document the drying process to ensure your property is back to normal.

Read more about the typical water damage restoration process.

Our highly trained technicians are ready to respond immediately to flood or water damage at your Jefferson City, MO, area property.  We also offer Commercial Services to our local businesses.

Please follow our tips outlined in the Water Damage Tips—Until Help Arrives Guide to protect yourself and your property.

Water, and their Category-SERVPRO of Jefferson City

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

If your rubber ducky needs rescued, SERVPRO of Jefferson City is just a phone call away at 573-635-5883.

Our approach to treating water damage in Jefferson City, MO homes depends on which category it falls into.

CAT 1 or Clean Water

Clean water is just that- water that has come from a source that is not contaminated. Examples of this would be a pipe bursting or a refrigerator leak. Also, if you have a leak that allows rainwater in through your roof, it is considered clean. Although clean water can cause significant damage, it is not considered hazardous to human health as there are no microbes in the water.  The biggest hazard clean water presents is if the area that has been damaged is not properly cleaned and dried. This can result in mold and fungus growth.

CAT 2 or Gray Water

Gray water is water that is slightly contaminated, either because of the nature of the source or because of neglect. For example, clean water can become “gray” water if it is left untreated for an extended period time. When a toilet or washing machine overflows, the resulting water would be considered gray because of its source. Toilet overflows containing urine only are considered gray.

CAT 3 or Black Water

CAT 3 water is highly dangerous to human health. Black water can include toxic materials such as bacterial diseases, chemicals, pesticides, microbes and more. Sewage based components such as bacteria, fungi, feces, viruses and parasites. Black 3 water situations are usually caused by sewage backups or overflows and flooding.

Since the human eye cannot see bacteria, it is not always obvious whether the water in your home is a CAT 2 or CAT 3.  If you experience a flood from a heavy rain, the water may look “clean,” but if there is any ground water that has backed up into your home as a result, there may be invisible microbes lurking in the water.

Any water damage that is not treated correctly will eventually elevate to the next category. Even a simple pipe burst can turn into a biohazard and mold issue if not treated. If you have any water damage in your Jefferson City area home, call SERVPRO of Jefferson City!

When winter strikes

1/29/2018 (Permalink)

This picture illustrates a roof with an Ice Dam

During the winter months, such as now, keep an eye out for snow accumulation on the downside of a higher level roof, where blowing snow will pile up. For safe snow removal, ask a roofing contractor for a referral.  Also, remove snow from basement stairwells, window wells, and walls to prevent water or moisture from penetrating walls. Also, keep attics well ventilated to maintain temperatures close to the outside, which will minimize the risk of dams forming.

Ensure pipes do not freeze and burst by keeping the heat in your home at an acceptable level, cover exposed pipes with insulation, sleeves, or wrapping and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

You can prevent illness and minimize secondary damages by contacting your SERVPRO professionals right away!

When dealing with a water loss, it is important to know there is more in the water than just water! As stated in the previous blog, pathogens are carried in water, and the likelihood for microbial growth is greatly increased when coupled with the passage of time, and structural intrusion.  In dealing with water damages, there are 3 categories:  Category 1, 2 and 3.  Water health and safety conditions change with the passing of time, and it is for this reason, the most important factor in mitigating a water loss is response time.  When you notice a water leak, whether big or small, getting professional help quickly is key to preventing further damage, minimizing mitigation costs, and to prevent possible illness.  As water passes through such things as carpet and building structures, it becomes contaminated. Therefore, even a Category 1,  clean water damage, can become contaminated, Category 3 water, in just a matter of time.  This type of contaminated water requires increased safety methods for mitigating, and we are highly trained in this area.  For health reasons and to minimize loss, a quick response is imperative.  We can get to you faster when you call right away!

An Introduction : Water Has Many Faces

We love the joys of water, from recreation to hydration. But here at SERVPRO, we know the damages it can bring as well, and we are here for you.

Water -  life’s sustenance, the world’s most valuable resource, accounts for an estimated 70 % of the earth’s surface.  According to the USGS Water Science School, the adult human body contains up to 60 % water.   It is commonly known that it is necessary to consume a certain amount of water in order to survive and support cell growth as well as promote healthy digestion.  Ironically, water is also the leading cause for destruction and damage in North America (RSA, 2015).  Excessive amounts of water comes not only in the form of hurricanes, but most water damage actually occurs in building structures due to rain, construction defects, plumbing failures, damage from freezing and even improper maintenance.   Water is so very unique because it is the only natural substance that is found in 3 states – liquid, solid, and gas – at temperatures normal to the earth.   Often overlooked when it comes to thinking of the dangers of water, according to Restoration Sciences Academy (2015) it is also the single leading carrier of pathogens in the world today. Furthermore, the elements supporting microbial growth are always present; leaving only the addition of excessive moisture to create a destructive chain reaction in which microorganisms can multiply and cause structural deterioration, create odors, and potentially create serious health issues for building occupants.  For these reasons, it is very important to properly and professionally mitigate water damage after a loss.  All restorers should follow the standard of care for water restoration, IICRC.  SERVPRO of Jefferson City has this expertise, and we are here when you need us to help answer your questions and safety mitigate any damages from water that you may experience.

Emergency Planning to Keep Your Home Dry

If you see this, call us before it gets any worse !

Here at SERVPRO we see a lot of damage.  Our crews are out working hard to restore homes from fire, water, mold,  whatver the situation may be.  With the current  winter weather, water damage is on the rise.    We would like to share some information to keep homes safe, and in order to do this, having a plan and knowing what to look for is key.

Water damage can occur in homes in a variety of ways.  Homeowners should check for leaks throughout their houses, inspect pipes and connections in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Look under and around sinks and around bathtubs for any discolorations. Do not ignore connections to dishwashers or refrigerators with water and ice dispensers.

It is very important to make sure water is flowing properly down drains. If not, try clearing the drain with a plunger or an over the counter solution (there are also home made solutions you can google)  . If that does not work, call a professional for assistance.  In order to keep drains and pipes clear, follow simple steps such as disposing of cooking oil in a container rather than pouring down the drain,  never flush diapers and other inappropriate items down toilets, and be careful of what you put in your garbage disposal.  Eggs or potato peelings, for example would not be good to put in your disposal.  In addition, backflow valves should be installed in sanitary and storm sewer lines.

Check the floors around water heaters for wet spot.  This could indicate you have a rusted tank or other problem, which you would want to take care of right away before the damage gets worse.  If necessary, have the tank replaced as soon as possible.

A leak in the roof of your home and clogged gutters or downspouts can also lead to significant water damage inside your home. As soon as you notice a leak in your roof, or even signs of significant wear, have it inspected and repaired immediately.  In addition, keep all gutters and downspouts free of leaves and other debris that could cause back up water to leak into your house.

Owners in properties located in areas prone to flooding should give serious consideration to applying a waterproof coating or membrane to the exterior walls and installing watertight sheilds over doors, windows and other openings.
